Founded in May of 2023, the ReCap Project is a conservation initiative dedicated to taking as many needle caps and small medical plastics out of landfills and incinerators. Our goal is to give this plastic a second life.
Our Story
The ReCap Project was born when we noticed plastic needle safety caps going into the landfill bins at medical offices, particularly during the pandemic where many thousands of vaccines were administered. We learned the polypropylene caps could be shredded at a local non-profit maker space, Peninsula Precious Plastics.
Launching a pilot program at Sutter Health Family Medicine Clinic in San Carlos, We were able to collect our first few pounds of needle caps. After experimentation and research, we perfected the process of shredding and baking, and created recycled plastic clipboards. We distributed the recycled clipboards we made to medical staff that helped us collect, inspiring them to do more and spreading awareness about the initiative.
